Dr. Douglas C. Frechtling
Dr. Frechtling spent most of the summer re-designing his distance-learning version of TSTD270 Tourism Research for the AMTA program. This course employs an improved dynamic presentation technology and was presented in the fall semester. He also headed up a Team that audited the traveler survey system of D.K. Shifflet and Associates (DKS&A) and submitted a report in December. The DKS&A Integrated Metrics Model produces estimates of visitors, characteristics and expenditures for hotels, airlines and individual U.S. destinations, and serves as the basis for reports of travel activity published by the Travel Industry Association of America and other organizations. The Team found that the Shifflet Model was basically sound but could be improved by better handling of nonresponse, calibration to external sources of data, and observing UNWTO definitions for international comparability.
Dr. Frechtling also served on a team preparing a National Tourism Strategy for the Republic of Georgia in Eastern Europe. He is responsible for recommending a program to develop a Tourism Satellite Account and for developing projections of the impact of the Strategy on tourism exports, employment and government tax revenue. The report will be filed in December.

The network is an initiative of the International Finance Corporation to develop high-quality education for managing tourism in the African region. Later in the semester Dr. Hawkins traveled to Cartegena, Colombia to attend the UNWTO General Assembly meeting. While there, he was elected to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Committee of Affiliate Members. Outside of this meeting, he was a featured speaker at an investment conference.
During the semester, Dr. Hawkins had students in the Sustainable Destination concentration work with him on an initiative of the UNWTO. Students, along with the professor, worked to develop tools for the System for Measuring Excellence in Destinations (SMED). The project was initiated by the World Center of Excellence on Tourist Destinations (CED) and includes a taskforce of tourism experts who are researching methods for rating destinations across fields such as transportation, security, activities and more. The Center’s Director, Francois Bedard, and MTA’s Dr. Stuart Levy, also visited with the TSTD 250 class to discuss the new system. In the spring, Dr. Hawkins plans to present students’ findings to the taskforce and will work with interested students to create a database for SMED tools.
Dr. Hawkins also continues to work on various projects with the USAID. This past semester, a major project was the Global Sustainable Tourism Alliance. Commissioned by USAID, the group includes GW, the Academy for Educational Development, Solimar, Inc., The Nature Conservancy and other leaders in sustainable tourism. Dr. Stuart Levy
Dr. Levy is thrilled to be back in Washington, DC! Back in the late 1990s Dr. Levy was an MBA student at Georgetown University - however his passion for tourism and hospitality remained. Dr. Levy enrolled in a number of MTA courses with Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Frechtling, and was very impressed by the program. Years later, as he was completing his PhD and focusing on an academic career, GW was at the very top of his list. He found that the DTHM is very unique due to its applied, international focus as well as its close connections with industry, government and NGOs. Also, he had a great comfort level and respect for the faculty and staff from my experiences a decade ago, and knew it would be a wonderful environment to work.
Dr. Levy is very excited about helping develop the hospitality management concentration with Dr. Yu. This will likely involve integrating real world
coursework with a yearlong rotational internship program that will provide students with significant experience in the areas of hotel operations and sales.
The first semester has been intense for Dr. Levy, but very rewarding. He taught
two undergraduate courses and really enjoyed interacting with the students. He is looking forward to next semester, and working with many of our MTA graduate students in an online marketing course!
