Hospitality Series
The Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management has attracted hospitality and gaming industry professionals to develop our hospitality curriculum. The Hospitality Management series will expose certificate students to the key issues and aspects of the industry and will offer them an opportunity to learn about management and operations, marketing, customer service, human resource management and more.
Students can take the series in its entirety, but the certificate with be a Tourism Destination Management Certificate. Courses from the series can be taken individually, or as electives within the Tourism Destination Management Program or Event Management Certificate Program.
CWTD 620 - Customer Service for the Hospitality Industry
In this course, participants will be made aware of the need for exceptional customer relations in the hospitality industry, and they will discover several strategies that can be used to deliver that level of service. In these eight units,
Students will learn how to:
- Refine their customer service approaches
- Put a special touch on hosting activities with all customers
- Apply different strategies to deliver high level of service.
CWTD 621 - Hospitality Management & Operations
This course will give you an overview of the main operating areas within hospitality (hotel) management and expose you to some fundamental management concepts and practices that should provide the foundation for your success in the industry.
Students will learn about:
- The special roles hotels have in their communities.
- How hotels could be the locus for public and private, occasionally historic, events, economic engines and a city within a city.
- The broad variety of activities and events that hospitality managers are involved in.
CWTD 622 - Casino Operations

This course will introduce participants to the basic structure and operations of casinos. It will enable personnel, from new employees to supervisors, to better appreciate the specific needs of all major departments in today’s casino venues.

This course demonstrates how marketing is important to the success of every business, and how vital it is for the success of the gaming industry in particular. It puts marketing into the context of the continuous growth of the gaming industry, the increasing sophistication of its offerings and constant increasing of revenue potential.
Students will learn that:
- Marketing goes way beyond just advertising or selling.
- Marketing involves systematic planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities.
CWTD 624 - Human Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry
This course will provide participants with a review of the history of the HRM field as well as insights into HRM theories and issues of particular relevance to the hospitality industry. Case studies and discussions will also be presented.
Students will learn that:
- The daily responsibilities and duties of HRM professionals.
- Discuss contemporary challenges in this field.
- The activities that typically occur within a human resources management department at a hospitality enterprise.
